The Kempsey-Armidale Road project is a significant recovery and rehabilitation effort, aimed at restoring a vital transport corridor that supports both the Armidale and Kempsey regions. This road, which plays a critical role in agriculture, tourism, and community connectivity, suffered severe damage due to a series of natural disasters, including bushfires (2019), storms and floods (2020), and heavy rainfall (2022). Landslips and deterioration have further complicated the road’s condition.
In response, emergency recovery works have already been conducted at critical locations. The project will now move to major recovery efforts in 2024, focusing on rehabilitating 43 km of Kempsey-Armidale Road and a 5.1 km section of Lower Creek Road.
The scope of the project is divided into two key areas:
Natural Disaster Recovery Works:
• Restoration of the 43 km section of Kempsey-Armidale Road and 5.1 km of Lower Creek Road to their pre-disaster conditions.
Improvement Works:
• Blackbird Flat: Sealing a 0.8 km section of the road.
• Flying Fox: Sealing a 1.85 km section of the road.
• Big Hill: Constructing unsealed pavement on three curves covering a 4.5 km section.
The funding for these efforts comes from both the NSW Government and the Australian Government through the Natural Disaster Funding Arrangements (2018). This funding specifically targets restoration of the road to its pre-disaster state.
Currently Ausling staff include Community Engagement Manager, Commercial Manager, Project Accountant and Senior Project Manager for Armidale council.
